Violin by Arthur Richardson, Crediton, 1928
£13,000
Arthur Richardson MBE (1882-1965) was one of the finest English makers of the 20th century.
Established professionally as a violin maker from 1915, he made copies of the Stradivari ‘Alard’, ‘Tuscan’, and ‘Betts’ violins, and the Guarneri del Gesù ‘King Joseph’ and ‘Sainton’ violins.
He also developed a personal Stradivari-derived pattern on which this example is built.
Richardson was awarded first prize in the Cobbett Competition 1919 for a violin and quartet.
